Kalbe Launches Children’s Science Fair

Jakarta, 22 March 2018 – PT Kalbe Farma Tbk (Kalbe) today re-launches its Kalbe Junior Scientist Award (KJSA) 2018 program, a reward program for the best science achievements in Indonesia for Primary and Middle school levels. The launch of this year's KJSA program is held by taking approximately 250 elementary school students from Jabodetabek areas to learn and share knowledge, through visiting 5 of Kalbe Group's factories that are located in Cikarang, Cikampek, and Sukabumi. The activity is in line with KJSA's purpose to introduce science to children from the early age, as well as developing the children's creativity in solving problems that they face on daily basis through the approach of science and knowledge.

"Kalbe Junior Scientist Award is a part of Kalbe's commitment to contribute for the development of science in Indonesia, specifically through the children. Through the science fair, we encourage children to be able to think creatively in solving problems around them through scientific approach. We believe that creativity is the root of innovation," said Pre Agusta, Director of Manufacturing of PT Kalbe Farma Tbk. “The launch of the program is started with the visit of Kalbe Group's factories, in which we hope that the children will be able to directly see the production process, and it shall rouse their creativity in creating their science project.

“This year we are attempting to expand the socialization network, both within Kalbe's internal or external stakeholders, such as the Ministry of Education and Culture, Regional governments, numerous elementary schools, science clubs, as well as non-government organizations that move in the child education fields. Since its first inauguration in 2011, the interest of the participants has increased year by year. In 2017, 1103 science projects from 26 provinces in Indonesia were submitted. Compared to KJSA of year 2016, with 917 projects, and 2015 with 811 projects," said Medianto Henky Saputra, the Chairman of the Committee of the Kalbe Junior Scientist Award 2018. "This year, the Ministry of Education and Culture will provide an additional education scholarship and certificates for the winners of KJSA 2018."

The conditions of participation of KJSA of this year is that students should be in 3rd to 5th grade during sign-ups, and 4th to 6th grade by September 2018. Participations will take form of individual participations, and are allowed to send more than one science projects with different themes. Science project that is signed up is an own-idea and has never won other competitions in provincial or national level. Science project could come from Natural Science, Applied Technology, Mathematic, or combination of the three. Specific for mathematics, the project does not take the form of mathematic games.

The socialization and application of the participants of KJSA starts on 22 March 2018 until 27 June 2018 where every participant is mandated to send in their papers, i.e. their application form, profile, summary of research and science ideas with explanation of the option, what is to be presented, and development of ideas/solution that will be presented, others that can be seen in

The Jury of KJSA 2018 consists of Dr. L.T. Handoko (Deputy of Technical Sciences, Indonesian Institute of Science/LIPI); Gusmayadi Muharmansyah, M.Ed (Head of Sub-directorate of Learners, Directorate of Primary School Development, Ministry of Education and Culture); Novriana Sumarti, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D. (Mathematician, Faculty of Mathematics & Natural Sciences, ITB); Prof. Dr. Nurul Taufiqu Rohman, B.Eng, M.Eng (Head of Innovation Division, Indonesian Institute of Science/LIPI), Dr. Tjut Rifameutia Umar Ali, M.A. (Dean of Faculty of Psychology, University of Indonesia).
Scoring criteria used in the judgment of KJSA 2018 are the originality of idea, background of the problem, solution provided in resolving the problem, innovation/newness/uniqueness, and benefit of the science project for surrounding environment and communities. From the scoring by the board of judges, 20 finalists will be chosen based on highest score, and then all finalists with their mentors will be invited to Jakarta in September 2018 to present their project in front of the board of judges. Next from the judgment during the presentation, 9 best winning projects will be chosen. All winners will receive prizes in the form of education savings fund, scholarship, and certificates from Kalbe and Ministry of Education and Culture.
