PRESS RELEASE No. 040/KFCP-DIR/PR/VI/22
Jakarta, June 21st, 2022 – PT Kalbe Farma Tbk (Kalbe) educated the society about the importance of increasing children’s immunity to prevent the spreading of the Singapore Flu or the HFMD (Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease), as an effort by Kalbe for the society to promote the “Together We Make the Nation Healthy” tagline.
The Executive of the Medical Department of PT Kalbe Farma Tbk, dr. Josephine Herwita, stated that HFMD was caused by an enterovirus, which could cause lesions or rashes in the mouth, palms, and soles of the patients.
During an Instagram Live of @ptkalbefarmatbk, dr. Josephine explained, “Early symptoms of Singapore flu for children is usually unnoticed. First, they will think it is a common fever, or they become fussy and lose their appetite, and have sore mouth and throat due to the rashes, followed by the redness in mouth, foot, and hand.”
Usually, if the redness in mouth, foot, and hand is continuously developing, it will cause a blistered, liquidy bulge. When that happens and causes children to be fussy and lose their appetite, then parents should be aware of such condition.
Parents are recommended to monitor their children’s health, in particular whether there are any changes or not. This is because those conditions are the early symptom for children being vunerable to the virus.
“The enterovirus transmission can possibly happen through saliva, which can be infected by using the same utensils. This infection can also happen if a person releases droplets during coughing or sneezing,” according to dr. Josephine.
The appetite loss will also affect the immunity for children, because a decreasing appetite will make them vunerable to several viruses and the fact that around 70 to 80 percent of immunity comes from their digestive system.
“Digestion has a vital role for children’s immunity, because eating nutritional food will fulfill the needs for good bacteria or probiotics and can increase their immunity,” as stated by the Product Manager Pediactric of PT Kalbe Farma Tbk, Apt. Brigita Puspita, S.Farm.
She then added, “However, when children become picky eaters, it will decrease the rate of good bacteria required for their body. Therefore, Kalbe has provided a way to maintain their digestive health with Liprolac.”
Gita also stated that the decreasing rate of probiotics could cause nutrient and antibody absorptions to deplete as well, causing the children to get sick easily, such as having digestive disorders.
Liprolac Baby from Kalbe contains BB-12, a good bacteria suitable for children at early stages of life. The fulfillment of good bacteria or probiotics in the digestive system will have a positive effect to their immunity.
“Before contracting the Singapore flu, a child possibly experiences fever and feels unwell, therefore the immune system play a significant role in our body, by guarding from and fighting those incoming viruses. But since we do not know the exact number of the immune system, an immunomodulator is needed,” as Gita stated.
She furtherly explained that Kalbe would have the said immunomodulator in the form of Starmuno Kids. This supplement contains Echinacea which can decrease the chances of complications and relapses of digestive infections, Black Elderberry that can minimize the duration of influenza, and Zinc Picolinate that can minimize the duration of common cold.
That being said, both Singapore Flu and Influenza cannot be differentiated from their early stages as they both have similar conditions, such as fever and fatigue states.
“The Singapore Flu has reddish lesions on the mouth, soles, and palms, that can blister when growing. If this symptom is found on children, it is recommended to go to the doctor to receive a proper diagnose rather than conducting a self diagnose,” as dr. Josephine concluded.
