Press Release No. 063/KFCP-DIR/PR/XI/21

Jakarta, November 16, 2021 - PT Kalbe Farma Tbk (Kalbe) through Kalbe Ethical Customer Care (KECC) commemorates World Diabetes Day by holding online health education to the media with the theme "Early Prevention for Kidney Complication in Diabetes". The speakers in the diabetes health education event are Prof. DR. Dr, Sidartawan Soegondo, Sp.PD-KEMD, FINASIM, FACE and dr. Tunggul Situmorang, SpPD-KGH. This education aims to increase awareness and understanding that diabetes has many impacts, not only at risk of causing death, but also the main cause of disability in the world because it causes various kinds of complications if not controlled, one of which is chronic kidney disease. In addition, educating that the decline in kidney function that affects patients having to undergo dialysis therapy can be prevented from an early age, and introducing Nephrisol which is a nutritional solution to meet daily nutritional needs without aggravating kidney damage in diabetic patients with decreased kidney function.

“Kalbe will continue to realize its commitment to improve health for a better life for all Indonesian people, one of which is for diabetic patients. And this year, we realize that commitment through the commemoration of World Diabetes Day, especially to educate about the risk of decreased kidney function in diabetes," said Roy Priady, Group Marketing Head of PT Kalbe Farma Tbk. "We continue to hold a series of educational programs through radio, webinars, and social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook throughout this November to inform that diabetes is a disease that can be controlled, and the decline in kidney function can be slowed with the right lifestyle," Roy continued.

“Diabetes is not a singular disease but several diseases with blood sugar levels above normal or hyperglycemia that must be controlled for life. There are 5 pillars in the treatment of diabetes, i.e. Controlling diet, Conduct physical activity/sports, Taking medication if needed, Controlling/checking blood sugar levels, Conducting education or webinars about diabetes, “said Prof. DR. Dr, Sidartawan Soegondo, Sp.PD-KEMD, FINASIM, FACE. "Do early screening without waiting for symptoms to prevent kidney damage and complications," added Prof. Sidartawan.

“The main causes of kidney failure or dialysis are hypertension and diabetes that are not controlled and often manifested at the same time. Kidney failure can be prevented early on by managing and controlling blood sugar, limiting the daily consumption of protein, and taking appropriate treatment according to symptoms," said dr. Tunggul Situmorang, SpPD-KGH. "Diabetes drugs are not insulin/kidney destroyers, but uncontrolled glucose and not taking medication will damage insulin and kidneys," added dr. Stump.

At the same time, Mindo Fuji Gloria, Product Manager of Kalbe, said that to support patients in carrying out their activities, Kalbe also provides nutritional solutions to meet daily nutritional needs without aggravating kidney damage in diabetic patients with decreased kidney function, that is Nephrisol. Nephrisol is the first and only oral nutritional supplement in Indonesia and is recognized by BPOM as having controlled protein content so it is safe for maintaining kidney function in people who have decreased kidney function. And this year, we made an innovation in the form of reformulation of carbohydrates in the composition of Nephrisol so that it becomes safer for people with diabetes.

Based on data from the International Diabetes Federation in 2020, the number of diabetes diagnosis in Indonesia reached 18 million in 2020, which means the prevalence of these cases increased by 6.2% compared to 2019. In fact, according to research conducted by the COVID-19 response in Indonesia, in the midst of a pandemic in 2020, the mortality rate in diabetic patients infected with COVID-19 is 8.3 times higher compared to people who did not have diabetes.

World Diabetes Day is celebrated every November 14, 2021. This moment is more than just a commemoration because it is a momentum to increase awareness and understanding for the public in prevention and management of diabetes, and maintaining health to avoid diabetes in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic by paying attention to lifestyle, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy diet to manage the blood glucose level as well as keeping one's body healthier.
