Melolin

MELOLIN is a low-adherent absorbent dressing
Composition
MELOLIN consists of a highly absorbent cotton and polyester fibre pad (central absorbent layer) which is bonded on one side to a very thin perforated polyester film (wound contact layer), which prevents the dressing adhering onto the wound but allows exudate and blood to pass easily through and a non-woven backing material on one side (outer hydrophobic layer)
Pharmacology
MELOLIN consist of:
1. Perforated polyester film Wound Contact Layer
- Allows serous exudate to pass through
MELOLIN disperses serous exudate rapidly and effectively without 'pooling', eliminating the risk of further skin damage, and maintaining a clean wound site.
- Low adherency
As the healing tissue is undisturbed during dressing removal, MELOLIN reduced patient discomfort and pain.
- Inert/non-sensitising
MELOLIN is safe to use.
2. 80% Cotton / 20% Polyester pad
- More absorbent
The construction of MELOLIN allows it to absorb significantly more light to moderate exudate compared with gauze and even some foam dressings.
- Lateral spread
MELOLIN protects and cushions the wound which makes it more comfortable for the patient to wear. Exudate spreads across the pad, maximising absorbent potential.
3. Non-woven backing material
- Dressings can be cut to shape
Makes is easy to dress awkward wound areas.
Indication
MELOLIN may be used on its own to dress dry sutured wounds, superficial cuts and abrasions, and other lightly exuding lesions. It may also be used as the primary wound contact layer for more heavily exuding wounds, if backed by a second absorbent dressing.
Warning
In common with other perforated plastic film dressings, MELOLIN should be used with caution in the treatment of leg ulcers that produce copious quantities of very viscous exudate. Under these circumstances, the exudate may become trapped under the dressing, leading to maceration and inflammation of the surrounding skin.
Direction
MELOLIN has a relatively low absorbent capacity and is therefore intended for use on lightly exuding wounds. In these situations, a single dressing may simply be secured in position with surgical tape. On more heavily exuding wounds, MELOLIN may be used as a wound contact layer, beneath a secondary absorbent pad held in position with tape or a bandage.
The frequency with which the dressing should be changed depends entirely upon the nature and condition of the wound.
Stability
Store at temperature below 25°C in a dry place.
