Medicine, University of Indonesia,

Laryngeal papilloma is a be-
nign tumor frequently found in
children. It is caused by strains of
human papilloma virus (HPV)
family.
Practically all patients with
laryngeal papilloma present with
hoarseness or a weak voice;
chronic cough, paroxysms of
chocking; recurrent respiratory
infections also may occur. Partial
airway obstruction may manifest
as stridor or chest retractions.
Diagnosis can be confirmed using
a flexible fiberoptic laryngoscope
to visualize the larynx. Papillomata
have a characteristic wart-like
appearance, and tend to be
concentrated on the free margins
of true vocal folds, particularly at
the anterior commissure.
The mainstay of treatment is
surgical ablation. The role of
medications such as alpha-
interferon, acyclovir, ribavirin, and
retinoic acid are still debatable.
