CO gas exerts its harmful effects
through its binding with haemo-
globin (Hb) to form COHb. This
binding diminished the oxygen
binding capacity of haemoglobin;
as a consequence, there is no
oxygen in the circulation, resulting
in tissue anoxia.
Depending on the CO level, the
symptoms range from light head-
ache, vertigo, nausea, vomiting,
syncope until coma and death.
The chronic effect was mainly
on the central nervous system,
causing Parkinsonism, dementia
and psychosis.
