The pharmacodynamic profile
and the phytochemical aspects
of Citrus aurantifolia's pericarp
ex-tract has been investigated.
The experiment used histamine-
induced guinea pig's isolated tra-
chea previously treated with pro-
pranolol 10

The active compound found to
have the inhibitory effect is fla-
vanon, as identified by ultraviolet
spectroscopy.

REFLUX OESOPHAGITIS

Reflux oesophagitis is inflamma-
tion of the oesophageal mucosa
secondary to reflux. This disease is
a common cause of upper gastro-
intestinal symptoms including
heartburn and regurgita-tion.
The development of reflux
oesophagitis reflects an imbalan-
ce between antireflux mechanism
of oesophagitis and gastric con-
dition.
History is the single most useful
factor in the diagnosis of reflux
oesophagitis. Special investigation
should be performed when symp-
toms are unspecific or persist des-
pite therapy. The aims of treatment
are to control symptoms and to
heal mucosal damage.
Treatment consist of three pha-
ses: lifestyle modification, medi-
cation and surgical therapy.
The major local complications
of reflux oesophagitis are bleed-
ing,ulcer,stricture and the deve-
lopment of Barrett's epithelium.
